Answered: Saving Sessions not supported

There is no provision for saving in RBR Activities, unless you are the Doctor you can not stop your day and replay it. Activities are meant to be completed in one sitting. To do otherwise would be unfair for scoring purposes to other drivers.

Answered: First Class Ticket (FCT)

	You will find that you need a First Class Ticket (FCT) from Auran to download the assets required to drive Activities. Please click the image link, as Auran/N3V say they will give RBR a commission.

Answered: Whistle - Sound Horn

 Standard Map Whistle Signs
Add the whistle asset used in the map to your assets.def file, if the sign can be detected by the Activity system it will trigger the necessary processing

 Invisible Whistle Sign (Addon)
Use the asset Xing Ahead (Invisible) kuid:39134:102210 and add the signs where you want the horn sounded. Note you will need to add the asset to your assets.def file. Do not modify the existing whistle sign (if any) and do not define the map whistle sign if using this method.

	Whistle Definition in Assets.def
For either method to work you must define the whistle asset to be used in the assets.def file for your Activity. This is mandatory as simply adding it to the core would mean that all maps would have all signs (and cause unnecessary asset downloads) and more to the point if you used a map with a different asset the whistle sign would not be recognised. Refer to the Developer Dox for the format of adding a whistle definition.

	In the case that there are no signs, add whatever a standard asset like Zec's ones on the new Shunt and put that into the assets.def.

The invisible is if there are already signs and they don't work which may be possible depending on the author. What the system does is look for assets that have the type of 'Whistle' and then scan for those and try to work out when to act on the 'Sound Horn'.

So the possible states...

 The map has whistle signs and when added to the assets.def they work .. done

 The map has whistle signs and they do not work use the invisible signs to add to the map so that the system can pickup when to act on horn sound

 There are no whistle signs, add the appropriate sign and add it to assets.def

	Note: The system allows multiple definitions of 'Whistle' so that the case of LH RH signs can be catered for or adding additional signs or whatever, as usual the system is as flexible as possible to cater for all of those 'butt' conditions that always pop up.

Answered: Downloading Assets

	Most RBR Assets are available form the Downloads area, we also host a few selected packages of content used in our Activities.

	Apart from the above and Murchison County you will need to download the Assets from the Auran/N3V Download Station via CMP. You will most likely need a FCT (First Class Ticket) to be able to transfer the Assets at a reasonable speed.

	As with all places within TS12 simply hit your 'Escape' key and you will transport yourself up one menulevel.

	Otherwise in the top left hand corner you will see a reverse icon, click that and the Activities Menu will close.

Answered: Map Layer setup

	Description: How to setup layers for use in an Activity Base Layer

	Please make sure that you create a base layer that is always enabled, by default this should be the 'session-layer', only add more layers if you are actually going to swap content in/out during an Activity (definitely only for advanced coders).

	Included in this layer should be all of your triggers and track marks, doing otherwise might cause misbehaviour with more advanced fiddling.

	Multiple Layers
You are able to add as many layers as Trainz permits, remember though that adding/removing layers should not be visible to the user (well unless on purpose) always make sure that the base layer is left alone.

	Important Notes
Only add layers in the session level (the second set starting with 'session-layer).

	Do not edit the route-layer or other top level layers! All layers are loaded when an Activity starts, if you do not need one you need to swap it out in the Start code.

Answered: Editing Map Profile

 Description: How to edit layers after initial creation

	Editing a profile after the initial build operation needs to be carefully done, otherwise you will ruin your existing work.

The steps to edit a profile asset after having done a build.

 Run CMP, select your profile asset and open for edit in explorer (you can leave CMP running)

 Go to your Activity directory in another explorer and open > Custom > Profile

 Select the original profile files there and copy and paste into the one opened for you by CMP

 Close the CMP explorer window

 In CMP commit the profile asset (which will put back the profile as it was before compiling)

 Control-L to load Trainz

 Select Map > Sessions > Select the Session > Edit Session

 Make your edits, save the profile, exit Trainz

 Run CMP, select your profile asset and open for edit in explorer (you can leave CMP running)

 Copy the files from the CMP Explorer back to the Custom > Profile

	If you have used a different KUID for this 'dummy' profile you may need to delete it so that you are not confused as to its status later.

Answered: Assets.def File Format

 Description: How to specify the Assets used in your Activity

	The Asset information is used to build an array of Asset data to be used in the course of your Activity. You must ensure that the information here is formatted exactly as shown, otherwise the assets will not be available to your Activity and also any errors will not display properly to users.

The name of an Asset must begin with a letter [A-Z][a-z] the length is up to you, make it descriptive. The Library adds Assets starting with two underscores eg __DriverModule so don't think any Asset like that is a problem.

Do not include Assets that are already included in the Profile or Map Assets as these can already be detected. If you add anything using Layer support they should be included with the Profile. Also, assuming the Asset is properly formatted do not specify sub-Assets as they should already be listed in the main Asset, the use of Assets that are not properly formatted is not really a good idea.

At this stage only Vehicle & Library are supported as a Type, later others will be added as required.

 Asset -- Start of a definition

 Name The named inside the Activity (eg Create)

 KUID The KUID either as <KUID:123:456> or <KUID2:123:456:78>

 Description Something sensible that can be shown to users (or you) as required

 Source Where the Asset can be found, must be one of;

 RBR On RBR (Exclusive)

 Type What sort of Asset, one of;

 Vehicle Loco and other rolling stock

 Library GSC Library (normally only used by Larry)

 HTML HTML and/or image files

 Servlet Special asset for the iTrainz system

 TrainzMenu Special asset that has the menus shown in Trainz (not Activity)

 Include code library that is included into the Activity

 RBRPath The RBR Asset download information, only if the 'Source' is RBR .. format not decided yet.

Answered: Using locks (Mutex)

In a multitasking world it can be difficult to make sure that synchronisation and/or queuing is properly performed. In Trainz each thread is running all the time, even if it is blocked/sleeping it is still there and can come alive to do some work. An example would be an industry waiting for a consist to enter its area, the process is 'asleep' but as soon as the consist triggers the industry it will start running again.

The ability to queue and lockout competing tasks in the windows work is called a mutex (Mutually Exclusive) another name is a semaphore and like a train one it means stop the track is busy.

Using the library there are various times when having multiple threads doing the same thing, like creating a consist, will cause too much overhead and possibly crash trainz outright. Mutex is used in various places in the library to ensure too many threads are not overloading the trainz core.

You have the ability to use mutex yourself. For example you have a signal locked until something happens that releases the lock.

Be aware that you can lock yourself up if you are not careful.

In the library the Mutex code is access by using the RBRMutex class.

Answered: Splash Images

	The Activity system displays progress information during system & user initialisation. One aspect is the provision of splash screens. The minimum user screen size permitted is 1024x768. The library system provides a tiled background to cater for larger screens. The top 1024x640 of the splash area is for the Activity to display informational images during the initialisation process, the size is fixed and the image must also be a JPEG(JPG) image. The library uses the remaining 1024x128 to display progress information. See example.

Inside the Custom/Splash directory you may place as many images as you wish, one must start with the string "Initial" (eg Initial.jpg, Initial_Splash.jpg etc) this is the image that will be displayed first up. The display of subsequent images is by sorting on the file name, if you have a preference name the images something like i01.jpg, i02.jpg, i03.jpg and so on and they will be displayed in that sequence. If there are not enough images the start up code will recycle the list but not the initial screen.

Do not include important information in splash screens. There is no guarantee as to how long they will be displayed or if they will be displayed at all. They are simply displays like you sometimes see in installation programs as this are being done.

Answered: High Low Detail

One issue with TS12 and asset creation generally is performance. All of the pretty add-ons come at a cost for those people on lower specification machines, the whole experience can be terrible with the lagging, rubber-band effect and so on.

In the RBR system there is a setting "High Detail" if on the user is telling us that they want all of the pretty effects from the Map and Activity if set to low we remove as much excess detail as possible. The end user needs to do nothing except turn the setting on or off. The rest is done internally.

For a Map the base map then has two main layers. The default "route-layer" which contains the low detail and base parts of the map, which must include all of the main objects like track, switches etc and a second layer called "high detail" which overlays the route layer with additional scenery style eye candy. When an Activity loads and low detail mode has been selected the "high detail" layer will be switched off, this will boost performance greatly on lower end machines and make for a more pleasant driving experience.

Inside the Activity itself the variable "Global.HighDetail" will be set true for highmode and false for low detail mode. An Activity can simply query this and decide what amount of additional traffic or other non-essential traffic can be eliminated.

Answered: Activity fails to load or crashes

	Generally if you install a new Activity and it fails to load or crashes without a message advising you of the cause it is an asset issue. Depending on your setup it can be quite frustrating to resolve. But here is the list of things you should do before asking for help.

 Check for missing Assets

 Check for Content Updates

 Fix Faulty Assets

 Download/Installed Missing Assets RBR File

 Check the Support Topic for the Activity

	If you are still stuck post a message in the Support Topic for the Activity do not start a new topic generally all support is provided via the Support Topic you can see the link for the topic on the page where your downloaded the Activity (RBR).

	Intruder alert, username mismatch!
This means that the Auran/TS12 user name doesn't match the one used for the RBR unlock. You need to ensure that your RBR profile has the correct Auran/TS12 user name and regenerate your key.

	Intruder alert, invalid local Activity!
You are not a RBR Developer and have created a local only use Activity but the system thinks that you have installed someone elses local onlu Activity.

When Athena and the Core Assets are updated an Activity that has been built by an older version may no longer be stable with the newer Core. In this case they will appear as 'Obsolete' in the Activities Menu. You will need to download a later version of the Activity from RBR.

Answered: Activity not authorised by menu system

RBR Activities must be loaded using the Activities Menu not by navigating to the map and loading the Activity as a TS12 session. If you try to load an Activity the wrong way you will receive the message 'Activity not authorised by menu system' and the Activity will exit.

This is to enable the return of The Living Railway and to also ensure that any prerequisites are met before you drive the Activity in question.

	You can have Athena request an unlock for you automatically, simply click the 'Download Activity Unlock Code' option.

Answered: How do I install my Activity Key

	In order to cater for different platforms and to provide for greater flexability there are a number of ways you can install your Activity Key for use by Athena and TS12.

	You can manually input your key into Athena

	You can ask Athena to download your key automatically

	You can load TS12 and the RBR Activity menu to have iTrainz download your key this happens without any action on your part but is subject to iTrainz being available.

	Please note that you must complete the Athena setup in order for things to work.

Answered: Requesting Assistance

	For TRS2004 & TRS2006 only Driver-to-Driver support is available
Click here to visit forum area

	Before requesting support
Before you submit a request for support please ensure that you check the FAQ's and forums for any post that may solve your issue. Requesting support when the information has already been provided is annoying and we would prefer that RBR be a fun place.

	Activity Support

	Generally Activity support is provided in the relevant Support Topic that is shown in the Activity download information.

Support Form
Support is obtained by clicking on the 'Support' option at the top of your screen. In this option you will see all of your support requests. To start a new support request click on 'New Request' there are four options available, please select the appropriate department as detailed below.

	Support Departments

	It is important that you select the correct department when requesting support, Staff do not necessarily have access to all departments so selecting the wrong one will result in delays in handling your request.

 Subscriptions & Access
This department is if you are having difficulties with your RBR Access, a payment, or other similar issues.

 If you have lost your password follow the lost password tutorial.

 If the request is about a payment please include the PayPal (or other system) related information, excluding this information will likely mean the first response is to ask for the details. Simply provide the Transaction ID #, date and amount of your payment in the initial request.

 Site Issues (non-access)
If you a reporting a site issue please make sure that the following information is provided.

 The full URL that causes the problem

 Preferably a screen shot showing the issue, consider circling or in some other way identifying the issue

 Steps necessary to reproduce the problem/issue

 TS12 RBR Content

 In the title please list the Asset name plus a short description, eg

 Core 1701:1701 - Shows error in CMP

 RBRDriver 1701:1705 - Crashed Trainz

 Refer to Trainz Issues Tutorial for detailed requirements

 TS12 RBR Activities
Only report released (ie non beta) versions as a support request.

 The title must include the Activity ID and name together with a short description, eg

 JT01 First Day - Red light at Claire

 LOC18 Crude for export - Asset error at startup

 Failure to complete this step properly will most likely delay your support request.

 Refer to Trainz Issues Tutorial for detailed requirements

	Submitting Information
If you are asked to supply assets from within your TS12 please use the following procedure, do not pack assets into a cdp or any other method.

 Open CMP

 Open each asset required for edit

 Open windows explorer

 Navigate to your TS12 installation then the 'UserData\editing' folder

 make sure that all the required assets are there

 Press Control-A to select all of the assets

 Right click and select 'Send to'

 Select 'Compressed (zipped) folder'

 When prompted enter a meaningful name for the file

 Press enter to save the file

 Upload the result as directed

	Finally please realise that although RBR is run in a professional manner we do this for enjoyment not money. Abusing or harassing Staff, or other community members will not be tolerated.

Answered: RBR Technology :: Athena Installation

	Installing and configuring the Athena technology and core Activity assets is fairly painless so long as you follow the steps required.

	Athena Technology Installation
Download the Athena installation program. Double click to run the installer, you may run the installer multiple times and upgrading is simply a matter of downloading running the newest version. After installation you will need to set the Athena configuration.

	Do not proceed any further if installation and configuration are not correct the Asset installer will not function!

	Athena Core Assets Installation
Download the Core Assets file.

	As all installation is via the TrainzUtil program a valid 'Trainz Asset Database' (TAD) is required, load CMP and allow it to build the TAD if necessary, installation will fail if the TAD is not stable, leave CMP running and then double click to run the installer, you may run the installer multiple times and upgrading is simply a matter of downloading running the newest version. For general usage there is no need to perform any configuration.

	After installation when loading Trainz you should see the 'Activities' option on the main Trainz screen.

	From time to time it is important to update the content asset system. From the Trainz startup screen select 'Start' to load the main Trainz application. If you have pending updates they will appear as shown, click the area of the 'Content Updates' to start the download dialogue. You will probably need a First Class Ticket (FCT) to stay sane click here for more information.
Answered: How do I install an Activity

	After you download an Activity from RBR you should have a file with the extension 'rbr', if you have already installed Athena then simply double click the file and it will be installed into TS12 for you automatically. If all assets and dependencies are present you should see a message similar to the sample screenshot.

<<<--blah-->>>

If some assets need to be installed you will see a message like;

<<<--blah-->>>

Open CMP and select the 'Today' tab you should then see the Activity listed. If there is a problem with assets the missing or error icon will be shown;

	If you see the red indicator you need to refer to the <<<Faulty Asset FAQ entry.>>>

For the yellow indicator right click on the asset and select 'Download' if the assets are on the DLS they should be queued for you to download.

If instead of the yellow indicator you see the red/yellow exclamation mark refer to the Faulty Asset FAQ entry you may need to raise the issue for resolution.

Some assets may cause the icon to be red which indicates that there is an asset error, normally we try to avoid assets that report issues but as the downloads can be updated you may find one listed a being in an error state. You will need to ask the author of the asset to repair it, the Activity may still work even if it reports an error but that is not always the case. For more help see the Faulty Asset FAQ entry.

If after installation of an Activity you have asset errors, including the Activity crashes please follow the resolution procedures listed below.

 Check Activity installed properly

 Ensure that you followed the Activity Installation instructions.

 If there are missing dependencies you need to install them (see the previous step)

 If some of the assets are showing as having errors they may need updating see the Content Updates Instructions

 If you still have errors rebuild the TAD see the Rebuilding TAD Instructions.

Answered: How do I manually install an Activity

	To make life as simple as possible we package our Assets with the RBR extension, after installing Athena if you double click on an RBR file she will try and install it for you automatically, she will even tell you if the Asset has detected any missing dependencies!

But we all know stuff 'appens, the file is not a secret concoction made to be unreadable it is simply a compressed file with the assets inside. The way to unpack the archive is to go to 7Zip download and install their archiving utility and follow the instructions below.

 Go to the directory where the RBR file is located

 Right click and select 7-Zip > Open Archive (if you want to browse)

 Select Extract to unpack

 Right Click and select 7-Zip > Extract Here (to unpack)

 Now Trainz will be upset if the Assets have other files present (like the RBR file itself) so copy the directories to an empty directory.

 Load CMP

 Select File > Import Content

 If you moved the assets select the directory that contains them all and click OK, all of them will be imported at once

 Otherwise, select each sub-directory and click ok to do them one at a time

 Click on the Today tab in CMP and see if all of the Assets installed properly

	Manual installation should only be considered if you are having issues with the automatic installation process. You should also be aware that patches and other items are built into the rbr extension and will probably not be handled as detailed above.

Please note that we do not support you doing manual installation

Answered: String comparison does not match when equal

	If you perform a string comparison on two literals eg;

 if( "Imperial" == "Imperial" )

	The GSC language will not act as expected, normally this is not an issue but if you are compiling Activities with the RBR compiler and a macro is set like this;

 MapMap = "Imperial"

	And then you code;

 if( "<$MapMode>" == "Imperial" )

	This is presented to GSC as shown in the opening example and will not work as expected.

Answered: Convert PNG to Targa with transparency maintained

	See the other discussion about Photoshop http://trainz.ws/1/how-to-create-a-targa-tga-image-using-photoshop about creating a TARGA direct from PS.

But one tool I found, costs $70 (PHEW) is 'Batch Converter' at http://www.batchconverter.com/register.shtml just tried a complicated image that was exported from Photoshop as a PNG and it created the exact same display in a TARGA which Trainz is totally happy with displaying properly.

Answered: How to create a Targa/TGA image using Photoshop

	From Sniper 297 (Trainz forums)

I don't know anything about photoshop, but I've had Paint Shop Pro 7 for almost 10 years and never did figure out how to make or edit alpha masks - because I never needed to, there's an easier way.

http://fly.to/mwgfx/

Either TGAtool2 or DXTBmp will create an alpha template from the image, and you can edit the image and alpha separately because the programs split the image into two different bitmaps, main and transparency.

Answered: How do I find what tags are allowed in a config.txt

	See bin/TETdata for files that determine validation:

container.txt
kind.txt
inheritance.txt

These three tell you what tags and containers are allowed and what are obsolete.

They also show when certain tags become compulsory eg 3.4 is a major jump in validation whereby a whole host of tags are necessary. Below 3.4 these are yellow flags (warnings). TB 3.4 and above these are red flags (errors).

Whenever CM says a tag is missing and been set to default these files will specify a default value. To clear the faults/warnings add the tags/containers in the appropriate place and use the default value.

eg you will find this in container.txt under motor (tags and containers are not in alphabetical order so you will have to search) :

full-throttle-speed
{
kind value
type float
compulsory 3.4
default 33.0
}

May not be optimum value but that's what Trainz uses if it is a warning and tag/container is missing. You need to add it in TS2010 SP4 or TS12 if you want to up-version an asset. ie you want to change trainz-build to TB 3.4 or higher in this case.

There are some others in the /lists sub-folder. Note:

nightmode.txt is being amended to add "car" and "none".

Things to watch out for:

tag 'asset-filename' becomes obsolete and the appropriate tag must be added in lieu:

eg

If a mesh is available you need to add a mesh-table. A shadow also in kind "traincar"

In kind "groundtexture" tags 'texture' and 'normal-texture' need to be added.

Many legacy assets did not have 'thumbnails' container or 'category-class'.

Many had tags that are now obsolete and must be deleted if you are to avoid red flags:

tag 'region' can now only be used in kind 'Map' (routes).
tags 'type' and 'origin' cannot be used at all.
There are many others listed in the above files.

Thanks to ianwoodmore on the Auran forums
